Jazz Rhythm Sketches (book/CD)
Publisher: DrumThis!
For Intermediate to Advanced Drummers
The idea for these Rhythm Sketches first came to mind around 1956, and it is as valid today as it was then.
During my studies in London, England, with Max Abrams (staff drummer with the BBC) these kinds of Rhythm Sketches were assembled from swing and bop records of the 40's and 50's. Max would write out a drum chart which he transcribed from a record. He would then slide the chart into the record jacket. As a student progressed in his studies, Max would have the student play his transcription with the record. This method of transcription is a great learning tool.
One day Max handed me a music manuscript book containing many of these phrases, solos, intros and licks. His method for understanding how to get around a chart and for understanding tune structures and utilizing their basic rhythmical patterns to play more musically.
