Ipanema is based on the Brazilian Guitar school and the Copacabana playbook.
The easy to medium difficulty pieces are intended for the more experienced guitarist. However, even beginners will find interesting material that makes it easy to get started with Brazilian music.
If the solo pieces are still too difficult, you can switch to the duos. And if you don't have a duo partner, you can use the accompanying CD as a substitute.

Preliminary exercises and introductory texts complement the playbook. Also included are instructions for improvising in the style of Baden Powell and the hit Hô-ba-lá-lá by João Gilberto.
