Jazz Guitar Soloing: Concepts (book/Audio Online)
Publisher : Hal Leonard
A Pentatonic Modal Approach to Improvisation
Series: Guitar Educational - TAB
Learn an entirely new way to improvise over jazz changes! This book sheds new light on the old five-note scales that all guitarists know and love. The system is theoretically sound, easy to implement, and best of all, it's designed specifically for guitar. It will work with any chord progression – from simple to complex and, unlike other systems, there are no notes to avoid.
The audio is accessed online using the unique code inside the book and can be streamed or downloaded. The audio files include PLAYBACK+, a multi-functional audio player that allows you to slow down audio without changing pitch, set loop points, change keys, and pan left or right.
The material presented is divided into 6 sections, with each section focused on an element of application or manipulation of the pentatonic scale.
Section 1: eleven different permutations of the pentatonic scale
Section 2: various ways in which these pentatonic scales can be applied to various chords. For example, over a Dm7 chord the author shows how they can apply eight different pentatonic scales to this chord in order to change the color of their improvised lines
Section 3 & Section 4 : symmetrical and “other” pentatonic scales. The pentatonic scales used in this section are built from the diminished and whole-tone scales as well as from mMaj7, Maj7(#4), 7(#9), 7(#5) and 13(b9) chords
Section 5: common chords progressions, including blues, rhythm changes, standards and John Coltrane’s famously difficult tune “Giant Steps”
Section 6: appendix containing a vast amount of information for further study and reference
